MATERIALS

Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread Size 10 (100% Mercerized Cotton 350yds/320m)
(1976 Natural) – approx. 2 balls, using two strands;
or Aunt Lydia’s Fashion Crochet Thread Size 3 (100% Mercerized Cotton125yds/114m)
(6906 Natural) – approx. 2 balls, using one strand;

CROCHET HOOK
C/2 (2.75 mm) crochet hook, OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

GAUGE
19 dc and 8 rows to 4”/10 cm

Note: Be sure to check your gauge before starting to crochet. If the gauge is larger, change to a smaller hook size, or work tightly. If it is smaller, change to a larger hook size, or work loosely.

SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Small – 21.5” head circum., 8.5” height;
Medium – 22.5” head circum., 9.0” height;
Large – 23.5” head circum., 9.5” height;

SPECIAL STITCH
V-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) in same st or space.

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes:

1. Ch 3 at beg of rounds count as dc throughout.
2. Ch 1 (ch 2) at beg of rounds does not count as st throughout.
3. To avoid mistake(s), count stitches in each round when finished.

HAT

Ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 4, work [dc, ch 1] 15 (16, 17) times in ring; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 4 – 16 (17, 18) dc and 16 (17, 18) ch-1 sps.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (count as first dc), dc in each ch-1 space and in each st around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 32 (34, 36) dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, V-st in next st, * dc in next st, V-st in next st; rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 16 (17, 18) dc and 16 (17, 18) V-sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, V-st in next ch-1 sp, * skip dc, dc in next st, skip dc, V-st in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 16 (17, 18) dc and 16 (17, 18) V-sts.

Rnd 5: (Ch 4, dc) in first st, skip dc, V-st in next ch-1 sp, * skip dc, V-st in next st, skip dc, V-st in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 4 – 32 (34, 36) V-sts.

Rnd 6: (Sl st, ch 4, dc) in first space, V-st in each ch-1 space around, join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 4 – 32 (34, 36) V-sts.

Rnd 7: (Sl st, ch 4, dc) in first space, (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 space, * V-st in next ch-1 space, (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 space, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 4 – 96 (102, 108) dc and 32 (34, 36) ch-1 sps.

Rnd 8: (Sl st, ch 4, dc) in first space, (dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 space, * V-st in next ch-1 space, (dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 space, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 4 – 96 (102, 108) dc and 32 (34, 36) ch-1 sps.

Next Rnd(s): Repeat Rnd(s) 7-8 until hat measures approx 7.5 (8.0, 8.5) inches / 19 (20.3, 21.6) cm from beginning.

Band

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same space, sc in each dc around; join with sl st in first sc – 96 (102, 108) sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, BPsc in each st around; join with sl st in first st – 96 (102, 108) sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc – 96 (102, 108) sts.

Rnd(s) 4-6: Rep Rnd(s) 2-3 once, then rep Rnd 2 once.

Fasten off. Secure yarn to WS.
